The journey of a hiker is not just about the trail, but also the people and experiences that make the journey memorable. In this account, we delve into the adventures of a hiker during their much-needed rest days, uncovering the kindness of strangers and the joy of relaxation.
A Restful Break in Bennington
After a well-deserved night at the Catamount Inn, our hiker, Shooter, and I embarked on a mission to fix our phone and trekking pole. A simple request for a taxi led to an unexpected act of kindness from the motel owner, Peter, who offered a ride to the Verizon store. This small gesture set the tone for the days to come, reminding us of the unexpected connections and support one can find on the trail.
Meeting New Friends and Family
Zipper, Freight Train, and their crew picked us up, and we headed to Zipper's parents' house. Meeting Jim and Cathy, along with their adorable golden retriever, Enzo, felt like a warm embrace. The typical hiker routine of unpacking, showering, and doing laundry was made even more enjoyable with cold beverages and a freshly made pasta dinner. The evening was a perfect blend of camaraderie and exhaustion, a true taste of trail life off the trail.
A Day of Water and Fireworks
Day 110 was all about beating the heat. We spent the day swimming in the bay, floating along and enjoying cold drinks. The highlight was the evening fireworks show, a perfect end to a relaxing day. The heat and humidity gave way to a cooling breeze, making it a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
Sailing and Pizza Adventures
The 4th of July brought another day of relaxation. Our hiker spent the morning catching up on blog posts and doing some much-needed trail maintenance. In the afternoon, we headed into town for provisions and a unique culinary experience - bar pizzas! After crushing a whole pizza, it was time for a sailing adventure. Despite some apprehension, our hiker had a wonderful time sailing, even managing to doze off for a few minutes. The experience was a memorable one, and a first for our hiker.
The Power of Kindness
These rest days were a testament to the kindness and generosity of strangers. Zipper and their family, especially Jim and Cathy, went above and beyond to make everyone feel at home. Their hospitality was overwhelming and a humbling reminder of the good in the world.
In my opinion, these off-trail experiences are just as important as the trail itself. They provide a different kind of adventure, a chance to connect with people and create memories that will last a lifetime. It's these moments that make hiking an incredibly enriching experience, offering a unique perspective on life and the kindness of others.
What many people don't realize is that hiking is not just about the physical challenge, but also the human connections and the unexpected joys that come with it. It's a journey of the body and the soul, and these rest days are a perfect example of that.
