Red Sox Manager Alex Cora is already making some key decisions for the 2026 season, but one crucial spot in the lineup remains a mystery.

While the Red Sox roster is still a work in progress, Manager Alex Cora has made a definitive choice for the cleanup hitter position: Willson Contreras. Acquired last month via trade from St. Louis, Contreras is expected to be the everyday first baseman.
Cora expressed confidence in Contreras, noting his ability to hit the ball hard and drive it to right-center field. He also mentioned Contreras' tendency to pull the ball more last year, which could be beneficial for the team.
But here's where it gets interesting... When it comes to the leadoff spot, Cora is still undecided. He's previously used Roman Anthony in that role, especially after Anthony's debut last season. Before Anthony's promotion, Jarren Duran was also used in the leadoff position, and he filled in again when Anthony was out in September. Both Anthony and Duran are still in contention for the leadoff spot.
Cora admitted he doesn't have a clear answer yet, which is unusual for this point in the season. He emphasized the importance of evaluating the final roster and the competition for various positions before making a decision. Cora also mentioned that he doesn't see anyone else on the current roster as a leadoff candidate.
For now, Cora is focused on creating a lineup that balances left-handed and right-handed hitters. He acknowledges the team's left-handed tendencies but points out that they still scored runs last year, finishing fifth in the American League in runs scored. The goal is to achieve balance through trades, free agency, or player development.
