A new father, Cooper Dossey, is on the brink of achieving his dream of securing a PGA TOUR card at Q-School. This is a story of determination, family, and the pursuit of a lifelong ambition.
A Father's Journey to the PGA TOUR
Dossey, a 27-year-old golfer, is just one round away from achieving full PGA TOUR status for the 2026 season. He currently sits one shot behind the leader after an impressive third-round performance at the Sawgrass Country Club. Dossey's journey has been an emotional one, filled with self-doubt and a newfound perspective since becoming a father.
"I've always wanted to get to the PGA TOUR, but I never truly believed I could. My time on the Korn Ferry Tour has shown me I'm good enough, but golf is a tough game. Competing against the best for these past three days has given me a lot of confidence, and holding my first TOUR card would be an incredible achievement," Dossey shared.
The New Dad's Perspective
Three weeks ago, Dossey's life changed forever with the birth of his son, Tucker William. He jokes about getting more sleep this week, but the reality is that becoming a father has shifted his priorities and given him a new sense of purpose.
"Watching my wife go through labor has made golf feel less important. I'm still passionate about the game, but I feel safer and more grounded knowing that my family is my priority. It's changed my perspective on the course, and I think it's made me a better golfer," Dossey explained.
A Family Affair
Dossey's grandparents, who introduced him and his brothers to the game, have been his biggest supporters. They used to be rules officials at the USGA and have been with him every step of the way. Dossey's goal heading into the final round is to bring home a TOUR card and honor those who first showed him the beauty of the sport.
"They've always been there for me, sometimes a little too much, but it's because they care. I want to hold a card and bring it back to them. It would be a dream come true to see my nana and papa with a TOUR card," Dossey said.
The Race for the TOUR Card
Dossey is not alone in his pursuit. Here's a look at the top contenders for the five full-status PGA TOUR cards:
- Ben Kohles and Marcelo Rozo are tied for first at 11-under. Kohles, a former Korn Ferry Tour Player of the Year, is hoping to avoid a return to the tour next year. Rozo, who finished top-75 on the Korn Ferry Tour, is aiming to improve his status.
- Dossey and John Pak are tied for third at 10-under. Pak, a former collegiate standout, had a tough rookie season on the PGA TOUR but is looking to turn things around.
- A.J. Ewart, with a hole-in-one in his second round, is also in the running. He's just one round away from skipping the Korn Ferry Tour and heading straight to the main circuit.
The Korn Ferry Tour Bubble
The next 40 finishers will earn Korn Ferry Tour membership for the 2026 season. Here are some notable names in the running:
- Spencer Levin, a 41-year-old journeyman, had a chance at a TOUR card in 2023 but fell short. He's playing well this week and is looking to improve his existing Korn Ferry Tour status.
- Kota Kaneko, the top finisher on the Japan Golf Tour's money list, is in a prime position to make his mark on the PGA TOUR or the Korn Ferry Tour.
- Luke Gutschewski, a recent Iowa State graduate, is following in his father's footsteps and aiming for PGA TOUR status.
- Ryo Ishikawa, a 20-time winner on the Japan Golf Tour, is pushing to play in the U.S. again. It's unclear whether he'll settle for Korn Ferry Tour status or aim higher.
Notables in the Field
- Frankie Capan III, a PGA TOUR rookie, is hoping to avoid a one-and-done fate and needs a top-five finish to assure his status.
- Jim Herman, the oldest player in the field at 48, is pushing for an improbable return to full TOUR status. He has three TOUR wins under his belt.
- Camilo Villegas, a five-time PGA TOUR winner, is looking to crack the top five after a strong second round.
- Harry Higgs, who nearly won the OneFlight Myrtle Beach Classic earlier this year, is fighting for his job and has slim chances of a TOUR card.
- Nick Hardy and Adam Hadwin, one-half of the 2023 Zurich Classic of New Orleans winning tandem, face an uncertain future without improvement this week.
As Dossey and the other contenders prepare for the final round, the question remains: Who will secure their PGA TOUR card and write the next chapter of their golfing careers? Stay tuned for the exciting conclusion at PGA TOUR Q-School!
