Bath Community Kitchen, a not-for-profit organization, has just received £19,650 from the National Lottery, enabling it to expand its operations from Twerton to Radstock in Somerset. This expansion isn’t just about reaching more people—it’s about creating a ripple effect of connection and empowerment. The kitchen’s weekly community meals, held every Thursday at the Lighthouse Centre, have already served over 5,000 people, offering a three-course vegetarian feast prepared by dedicated volunteers. But their work goes beyond filling plates; it’s about filling hearts with a sense of belonging.
And this is the part most people miss: The funding doesn’t just support meals—it also funds life-changing programs like Cook Like a Chef, aimed at young people at risk of homelessness, and Guys Can Cook, designed for older men living alone who may feel isolated. These programs aren’t just about teaching culinary skills; they’re about building confidence, fostering independence, and creating a support network.
Founder Rob Lewis passionately explains, 'Cooking and eating together is such a powerful way to build connections, confidence, and a sense of belonging.' His words highlight the dual purpose of the kitchen: addressing food poverty while strengthening community ties. For instance, the project has prevented nearly four tonnes of food from going to waste, proving that sustainability and social impact can go hand in hand.
Volunteer Ellie Rymer adds, 'It’s a special place because when people come together to eat, there’s a relaxing atmosphere. People come for all different reasons, but they leave feeling part of something bigger.' Whether it’s kids getting hands-on in workshops or adults sharing stories over a meal, the kitchen creates a family-like environment that’s both fun and transformative.
In addition to the National Lottery funding, Bath Community Kitchen has received a £5,000 grant from the Groundworks UK Comic Relief Community Fund, as well as over £5,000 in donations and support from local businesses. This collective effort underscores the community’s belief in the kitchen’s mission.
