The 40-year-old entrepreneur, hailed as a "Chinese finance whizz," has made groundbreaking strides in artificial intelligence (AI) with his models that have left the world in awe.
Nature's profile on Liang highlights the impact of DeepSeek-R1, a reasoning model released in January, which demonstrated that the United States was not as far ahead in AI as many experts had believed. This model's performance rivaled that of OpenAI's offerings at a significantly lower training cost, challenging the assumptions behind the high valuations of US semiconductor and AI companies.
DeepSeek, based in Hangzhou, gained prominence early this year when it caused a stir in the US stock market. On January 27, a massive sell-off wiped out nearly $1 trillion in tech stocks, including a staggering $600 billion from Nvidia alone.
