A thrilling performance by Karon Boyd propelled Wichita State to a commanding victory over Eastern Kentucky University (EKU). This game, held in Charles Koch Arena, showcased the best of Wichita State's basketball prowess.
Boyd, with an incredible start, sank four three-pointers in the first ten minutes, setting the tone for a career-high 22-point performance. This dominant display helped Wichita State (8-5) wrap up the non-conference schedule on a high note.
But here's where it gets controversial... Wichita State's strategy paid off big time. With 12 successful three-pointers, a 20-point lead on the boards, 26 assists, and only seven turnovers, they showcased a well-rounded and disciplined approach. The 49 rebounds, a season high, and limiting EKU to just 29 total rebounds, including a mere six offensive ones, was a masterclass in defensive strategy.
Will Berg, with his third double-double of the season, and Brian Amuneke, who tied a season high with 11 points, supported Boyd's stellar performance. Kenyon Giles, despite a late start, contributed nine points, and Dre Kindell's six assists showcased the team's unselfish play.
An emphatic 20-5 run in the first half, capped by Boyd's fast-break dunk, set the stage for Wichita State's dominance. The Shockers' control of the paint, with Emmanuel Okorafor and Berg's second-chance opportunities, pushed the lead to a comfortable 30-13.
Wichita State's shooting accuracy in the first half, at 53.3%, and their 6-of-12 three-point success rate, contrasted sharply with EKU's 27.6% shooting. This disparity in performance continued into the second half, despite EKU's initial attempt to gain momentum with a pair of three-pointers.
And this is the part most people miss... Wichita State's ball movement and unselfish play were the true stars of the game. With back-to-back threes from Giles and a triple from Jaret Valencia, the Shockers' lead extended past 35 points. Their ability to find open shooters consistently showcased a well-drilled and cohesive unit.
The largest lead, at 78-39, came with just over eight minutes remaining, and from there, Wichita State cruised to victory. Multiple reserves contributed, demonstrating the depth and talent within the team.
So, what's next for Wichita State? They open the American Conference play on New Year's Eve against UAB. Will they continue their dominant streak? Only time will tell, but one thing's for sure: Wichita State has the talent and strategy to go far.
