Live Updates: Major Works Cause Delays on A172 and A174 at Middlesbrough Junction
Motorists in Middlesbrough are facing significant disruptions as major works begin on the A172 Marton Road/A174 Interchange. The repairs and improvements, set to last until autumn, will impact traffic flow and cause long tailbacks, particularly on Dixons Bank and eastbound on the A174. The works include concrete repairs beneath the bridge, replacement of waterproofing, new kerbs and footways, resurfacing, and the installation of new pedestrian fencing and vehicle safety barriers.
The A172 will have a temporary continuous contraflow system, reducing north-south traffic capacity. Motorists should expect temporary lights, occasional overnight lane and full road closures, and left turns only when accessing Marton Road via the slip road. Right turns onto the A174 and the bridge will also be restricted. These measures aim to minimize the need for lengthy diversions while the works are ongoing.
Advanced warning notice boards will be placed on affected roads, and drivers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly. The council has worked closely with the main contractor, Esh Construction, to ensure traffic can still use the bridge during the works.
