Manchester City is feeling optimistic about outmaneuvering their fierce rivals, Manchester United, in the pursuit of Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson. Recent reports indicate that the Citizens are working diligently ahead of the January transfer window and are close to finalizing a deal for Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth.
As they aim to build on their impressive form—having narrowed the points gap to league leaders Arsenal to just two—Man City is eager to bolster their squad in the upcoming transfer period. With Semenyo nearly secured, speculation suggests that Man City could also snatch up another target that United is eyeing, namely Anderson, as both clubs seek to enhance their midfield options.
According to insights from TEAMtalk, there’s a sense within the Manchester City camp that they may replicate their success in signing Semenyo by also acquiring Anderson. Last season, City faced significant challenges due to the absence of Rodri, which has heightened their resolve to bring in Anderson as a safeguard against potential future midfield issues.
On the other hand, Manchester United is actively seeking to recruit at least one or two new midfielders in the near future, with Anderson rising to prominence as one of their key targets. While there have been rumors linking United with other midfield talents such as Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and Ruben Neves from Al-Hilal, manager Ruben Amorim is keen on avoiding a short-sighted approach.
Signing Anderson would not only serve immediate needs but also align with long-term goals. Former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown emphasized the club's commitment to pursuing Anderson vigorously, stating, "Elliot Anderson is the top target for Man United. They should be bending over backwards to bring him in, and from what I hear, they are prepared to go all out because they don’t want to miss out on him."
Brown also mentioned the likelihood of a deal happening soon may be slim as Nottingham Forest will likely resist losing such a valuable player. He suggested patience might be required, but the club should be ready to take whatever steps necessary to secure Anderson’s signature. Brown further praised Anderson’s capabilities, noting, "He’s shown for Forest and for England that he can dominate games on his own merit, not just when the team is performing well. He possesses great energy, covers a lot of ground, and isn’t hesitant to tackle; plus, once he recovers the ball, he can quickly find a teammate."
This skill set aligns perfectly with what United has been desperately searching for, and they are determined to ensure they are the ones to successfully sign him, rather than letting another club swoop in.
