In a shocking turn of events, Green Bay Packers' star pass rusher Micah Parsons is feared to have suffered a torn ACL in his left knee during a recent game against the Denver Broncos. This information was confirmed to ESPN by a reliable source and was initially reported by Pro Football Talk.
The injury occurred during the third quarter of the match, which ended in a disappointing 34-26 loss for the Packers. Parsons injured himself without any contact while attempting to pressure Broncos quarterback Bo Nix. Observers noted that it didn’t look promising, as Coach Matt LaFleur succinctly put it, "It didn't look good. I'll leave it at that."
Unfortunately, the night took another unfortunate turn for the Packers when they also lost wide receiver Christian Watson, who sustained a chest injury in the same quarter. Watson had to be taken to a hospital for further assessment but was able to return with the team to Green Bay afterward.
Reflecting on the game, LaFleur expressed frustration, stating, "That’s obviously a really tough night in a lot of ways in regards to losing the football game. Give Denver a ton of credit. That’s a really good football team. I thought it was a dogfight for most of the game, and then they kind of ran away with it in the second half. It was also a double whammy for us, just losing some pieces that are critical for our success. But that’s the name of the game. I told the guys nobody’s going to feel sorry for us. We’ve got to rally around one another. Everybody’s going to have to elevate their play."
Parsons showed signs of distress immediately after the injury, pulling up and clutching his knee. Although he managed to walk to the locker room, he was limping significantly and ultimately was ruled out for the remainder of the game. Notably, despite not recording any sacks during the match, he did have an impact early on, forcing a fumble against Broncos running back RJ Harvey during the very first drive of the game, which was recovered by linebacker Edgerrin Cooper.
This season has been quite remarkable for Parsons since he joined the Packers. The team had made a bold move to acquire him just before the season began, trading two first-round picks along with defensive tackle Kenny Clark to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for Parsons. Alongside this, the Packers offered Parsons a lucrative four-year contract worth $188 million on the day of the trade.
Leading into this game, Parsons had recorded an impressive 12.5 sacks, making him the first-ever player in NFL history to achieve at least a dozen sacks in each of his first five seasons. Additionally, he entered Week 15 with a league-leading total of 60 pressures, which was significantly ahead of any other player, marking the most pressures recorded by any player in the first 13 games of a season over the past seven years.
On the other hand, Watson's injury also marked a significant setback. He was ruled out shortly after sustaining the injury when Broncos cornerback Pat Surtain II fell onto him while intercepting a deep throw from quarterback Jordan Love. Watson seemed to land heavily on his left shoulder due to Surtain's weight adding to the impact.
Before exiting the game, Watson had contributed three receptions for 29 yards, helping the Packers lead 23-14 at the time of his departure. This was Watson's eighth game of the season, having previously missed the initial two months while recovering from a knee injury. Upon his return, he had shown excellent form, accumulating 25 catches for 452 yards and five touchdowns.
Notably, entering this matchup, Watson had one of the highest averages in the NFL, with 18.1 yards per catch since returning in Week 8, ranking him fourth overall. He also tied with Davante Adams for the most receiving touchdowns (five) since Week 11.
Jordan Love acknowledged Watson's pivotal role, stating, "Since Christian’s been back from his rehab, he's done some great things and been that explosive playmaker that we needed. With him going out, I think we still got plenty of depth in that receiver room and other guys that played plenty of ball and can step up and make plays. I think we’ll have no problem filling that void if he’s got to miss time."
The Packers faced additional challenges as they finished the game without right tackle Zach Tom and safety Evan Williams, both of whom also suffered knee injuries. However, it appears that neither injury is expected to result in long-term issues.
