Power Outage Disrupts Emporia, Evergy Working to Restore Service
Emporia residents and businesses experienced a significant power outage on Wednesday evening, affecting over 1,000 Evergy customers. The disruption began around 7:30 p.m., impacting a specific area along the downtown corridor, from 12th and Commercial to just past Road 155, running north to south, and from Southeast Street to South Neosho, extending east to west. The outage caused traffic lights at 6th and Merchant, 7th and Merchant, and 6th and Commercial to malfunction, leading to potential hazards for drivers at uncontrolled intersections.
Evergy and Emporia Fire responded swiftly, working to restore power. By 9 p.m., the majority of customers had their electricity back, but the cause of the outage remains under investigation. Initial findings suggest a malfunctioning transformer near South Commercial may be responsible. Despite the quick resolution, this incident highlights the importance of reliable power infrastructure and the potential challenges that can arise during outages.
