Bold claim: San Diego Padres at a crossroads with potential new owners on the horizon. But here’s where it gets controversial: the journey from interest to ownership is winding, and the stakes are high for a city hungry for a World Series title.
San Diego — The Padres are edging closer to a change in ownership. On Thursday, February 26, the club confirmed it has received five strong bids from prospective buyers that could push the sale into the next phase.
The Padres declined to disclose the names of the bidders, citing privacy and competitive reasons.
Last November, the Seidler family announced they were evaluating strategic options for the Padres, including a possible sale. This announcement came two years after owner Peter Seidler passed away from non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.
“We have decided to begin a process of evaluating our future with the Padres, including a potential sale of the franchise,” said John Seidler, Padres chairman, at that time. “We will carry out this process with integrity and professionalism in a way that honors Peter’s legacy and his love for the Padres, and that establishes the franchise’s long-term stability.”
As the sale process unfolds, the Seidler Family told CBS 8 in November that the entire organization remains devoted to the Padres’ mission: building a World Series–winning team.
“During the process and as we prepare for the 2026 season, the Padres will continue to prioritize our players, staff, fans, and the broader community, dedicating every resource to winning a World Series championship,” Seidler emphasized. “We remain deeply committed to this team, its supporters, and the San Diego community.”
CBS 8 will keep tracking any new developments as they emerge.
